Chef Christine Cushing bakes holiday cookies with homeless youth

Chef Christine Cushing helps roll out the holiday spirit with a cookie baking lesson for homeless kids at Covenant House today.

The celebrity chef joins youth in the agency’s new culinary arts training kitchen where they will turn out batches of sweet treats for their fellow residents this holiday season.

Sharing the joy of creating tasty treats with kids who are striving to turn their lives around was an experience Christine Cushing wanted to enjoy.

“As a chef, I’m so glad to have the chance to work with these youth to encourage them to follow their dreams and share their talents, especially during this season,” Christine says.

“We are thrilled to have Christine come to work with our kids who are training for jobs in the food industry,” says Danielle Neilson, who heads up Covenant House’s vocational services. ”Youth in our Cooking for Life program are baking and decorating lots of delicious goodies for the whole house now. And this is a rare opportunity for them to learn from a recognized expert.”

Christmas is the hardest time of the year for young people who are without family but want the same joy and warmth we all hope for,” Danielle says. “We try to make Christmas as much like home as possible at Covenant House. Having traditions like fresh-baked cookies helps brighten our kids’ Christmas.”
