Thirty years of giving kids opportunity and hope

For a kid living on the street, every day is a fight for survival. Too often abused and abandoned by their families, these desperate kids wake up each day to the crushing reality that they are homeless and completely alone.

This year, Covenant House marks its 30th anniversary. For the past three decades, Covenant House has offered some 82,000 kids the opportunity and hope to move from a life on the street to a life with a future. As a national leader in the care of homeless youth, we are constantly adapting to serve their increasingly complex needs. Learn more about our milestones here.

In recent years, we have built a rooftop garden and a day program to help kids with mental health issues. Most recently, we launched a culinary arts training program. We have also modified current programming, like our longer-term residence and our on-site school, to address the growing complexity of our kids’ needs and to ensure they have the very best chance at success.

Sadly, since our doors opened in 1982, the need for our services is greater than ever. Ten thousand kids spend some time living on the streets of Toronto each year.

We take care of these lost, scared and desperate kids. We feed them and give them a warm bed, as well as offer guidance and programs that help kids develop practical skills. We do is in a caring and non-judgmental environment. This is possible because you care enough to help us.

Your online donation makes the difference between a child sleeping in a back alley or getting a good night’s sleep, eating a nourishing breakfast and heading off to a productive day at school or work.

Crisis Care: Food, Shelter and Health Care

Homeless youth may act tough, but in fact, they are frightened kids who have been forced to fend for themselves before they have developed proper life skills. Like all of us, they long for love and acceptance. The first step toward changing their stories is to get them through our doors.

At Covenant House, kids get three meals a day, clean clothes, and a warm bed and a hot shower. If required, the kids visit our in-house health clinic to deal with any immediate health issues or injuries.

Offering our youth these basics help them focus on their journey to independence.

Counselling, Education and Job Skills

Our kids want so much to live successful, independent lives, but they are young and need support and encouragement. While our youth need help navigating through their troubled adolescence, many of them go on to live healthy, productive lives.

When they choose to stay at Covenant House, our youth make a commitment to go to school, find employment or, if needed, attend our mental health day program. Our youth workers counsel them on making good choices that will have the best possible outcomes for their future. Kids can take advantage of our in-house high school or our job training programs, such as Cooking for Life.
